Being a Med Spouse

Building and maintaining a relationship with a partner working as or training to be a physician is a true test of will and commitment. The reality is that the personal and professional worlds of your medical partner are often impossible to separate. As George from Seinfeld would say, “worlds are colliding!”

Navigating romantic relationships can be challenging for medical professionals, but it also takes a toll on their partners. Managing relationships is difficult even on good days. Add an overworked, underpaid, and often underappreciated medical trainee into the mix, and it becomes exceptionally trying.

Finding Support

During some of the harder times, I turned to online communities for solace, hoping to feel less alone on this journey. Groups like the MedSpouse subreddit were helpful, providing reassurance that others shared my struggles. It felt good to be part of a supportive network. However, I didn’t feel entirely comfortable actively participating. Whether it was because the discussions were largely driven by women or because of my own hesitation to openly share my feelings, I struggled to fully engage. While the support was valuable, I realized there was a gap for med spouse men like me—a space where we could connect and support each other more directly.

Building a Community for Men

With more than half of medical students now being women, being a med spouse man is no longer as rare as it once was. Yet, resources and communities tailored specifically to our experiences are still few and far between.

My goal is to create a community where men can come together to share advice, experiences, and support. Whether it’s coordinating finances, navigating intimacy, managing family life, or just venting about the unique challenges we face, there’s so much we can gain from connecting with each other.

I hope this message resonates with you and encourages you to join the conversation. I plan to release new content weekly and am committed to supporting anyone who reaches out. Together, we can build a community that empowers med spouse men to thrive.
